Waunakee Rotary Newsletter Aug. 9, 2018
Though at a slower pace than Waunakee, the Town of Westport is growing, too.
At the Aug. 9 Waunakee Rotary meeting, Tom Wilson, the town’s administrator, attorney, clerk-treasurer talked about some of the newer subdivisions and other projects in the neighboring municipality.
Those include Carriage Ridge West, where Cobblestone Drive connects to Woodland Drive in Westport and Daily Drive Connects to Waunakee. Developer Tom Bunbury is just finishing this section, where trails are planned, along with parks and gazebos.
The other section of Carriage Ridge connects to Tuscany and Woodland Drive, Wilson said. Because of the topography and grading, a life station is not needed. The subdivision shares its sewer system with the village.
“That’s unusual,” he said about the cooperative arrangement between the two communities. Wilson added that installing two sewer systems side by side in would make no sense.
The other subdivision where lots are available is the Community of Bishops Bay bounded by Oncken Road, Century Avenue and Hwy. M. In the Westport section, 349 units are planned in all, with another 2,000 lots nearby in the City of Middleton.
The Waunakee Community School District expects it will see enrollment grow by 800 from families within the Community of Bishops Bay, Wilson said.
While the possibility of building a school within the subdivision was discussed, Wilson wondered about the outcome of a school referendum posed to voters in parts of Springfield, Dane and Vienna, along with the Village of Waunakee.
Inspire Early Childcare Center is opening on Oncken Road soon, Wilson added.
With the region’s growth and safety in mind, several road projects are planned. A $ 2 million Dane County study will focus on widening Hwy. M to 4 lanes, and at the a recent Madison Area Transportation Planning Board meeting, there was discussion about improving Hwy. K, Wilson said.
The county also plans to repave its portion of Hwy. Q in Westport in the coming months, as well.
Wilson said at the county level, the Capital Area Regional Plan Commission plans to conduct a survey on growth, and he hopes Westport and Waunakee residents will take it.
The state also has road projects underway, including the roundabout at Hwys. 19/I/133 and another in 2020 at River Road.

Committee chairs also gave reports on their projects:
-Membership could use more members, as it’s down to just three. There’s an opportunity to chair this committee, as well.
-The next exchange student, Jenny, from Taiwan is arriving next Thursday, and Lori Derauf will pick her up at the airport.
-The Sept. 13 meeting will be at Endres Manufacturing prior to Wauktoberfest, and the club will tour the new Endres Mfg. addition.
-The international committee is working to plan another trip to Haiti in January.
-The Rotary Mallards Night is Saturday.
