Waunakee Rotary Newsletter Aug. 8, 2019
With the new Rotary year just beginning, the Waunakee club’s committee chairs talked about their goals and projects during the Aug. 8 meeting.
The fellowship committee is looking for an October event, possibly a visit to the Badger Ammunition site. The goal is to schedule nine events throughout the year that are not too crowded around other events, said Bob Klostermann.
International has gotten an $8,000 district grant approved for a girls’ dorm and bathroom at the SOAR Kenya school. Mick Holm said Rotarians may have an interest in traveling to Nakuru, Kenya, to visit the school and possibly take a safari.
The goals are to have one or district or global grant per year, Mick Holm said.
Linda Olson added that there are two district Friendship exchanges – one to Brazil and another to Russia. Also, she reminded the club that World Polio Day is Oct. 24, and all Great Dane locations will donate $1 per beer toward the polio fund.
For fundraising, Phil Willems said they are still looking for a spring project, possibly a Derby Day event.
Harriet Statz, on the youth and vocation committee, said scholarship application planning will begin in October. The World Affairs Seminar was a big success, she said, and one student from Waunakee returned and wants to go next year. A youth counselor is needed for the Youth Exchange program; Jim Kattner will be the youth officer. Also, Jonny Buroker has previously organized the reading program at Heritage Elementary School and someone is needed to replace him.
The membership committee has set a goal of four new additional members to the club, said Bob Pulvermacher. Jean Elvekrog will head up a new program inviting business owners to meetings.
The goal for meetings and public relations is to not only look for speakers at meetings but solicit feedback from members about past speakers and what the club does or doesn’t enjoy, Todd Schmidt said.
Bob Sachtjen said the community service committee is thinking of ways to increase sales at WaunaFest. One idea is to place a few tables next to the food stand in the beer tent; another is to have roving vendors sell food to the crowds.  Also, the committee has a list for new projects, such as a rope at the Water Tower sledding hill to help kids get back up and a project with the Boy Scouts planting a butterfly garden at the library.
President Taylor Endres also reported that the club is considering fitness workout stations at the Rotary Walk at Village Pond.
