If you’ve got a cat or dog that hates the vet’s office, you might want to try Checkout Veterinary in Sun Prairie, where Dr. Marty Greer has opened a drive-through clinic. After opening a similar clinic in Lomira, Wisconsin, and contemplating the business strategy, Marty decided to patent the idea and build another clinic in Sun Prairie.
The new concept in delivering small animal wellness differs from the traditional concept made famous by James Herriot, the veterinarian who authored the “All Creatures Great and Small” books. Marty said she thought of the idea after seeing a sign on an IBM ad in an airport that read “Stop Selling What You Have And Start Selling What You Need.”
The drive-through concept offered an improved method of delivering pet checkups and routine care.
With help from a smart patent attorney, Marty received the patent for the drive-through concept in 2020, just as the coronavirus pandemic was beginning. She bought the lot at 2710 Prairie Lakes Dr., near Woodmans and built a structure with four large garage bays.
Since it was completed, dog and cat owners can call for an appointment or just show up. Marty, a Fear Free Certified veterinarian, said caring for the animals in the bays – away from other potentially intimidating dogs or cats – provides a greater degree of comfort. It’s convenient and efficient, and the whole family can come along. Multiple animals can be brought in, and exam tables can be used if needed.
Marty has designed both the Sun Prairie clinic and the one in Lomira like red barns, and this will be a signature for the business, which could become a franchise in the future.
Neither of the two drive-through clinics offer surgeries, x-rays or more specialized care; Marty has another clinic in Sun Prairie to provide that care.

-We will soon get word on a new procedure for nominating the business person of the year. It involves providing some sort of reasoning as for why nominees deserve the honor. We’ll also learn more about the voting process. Nominees do not have to be a Rotarian.
