Vol. 57 No. 20
Waunakee Rotary Newsletter May 26, 2022

Waunakee Rotary committees remain active, and the May 26 club assembly gave committee chairs a chance to share updates on their projects.

The membership committee is working on how to engage new members, and also, how to re-engage former members to learn why they may have drifted away from the club, President Ross Mauer said. The committee will work with incoming president Joe Baer on this.

Ross said he was notified by Rotary District 6250 that, because several new members have joined, if the new members have paid dues for four months, the club is eligible for a $1,000 grant for those new members to use toward a project.

The school and vocational committee has arranged for the Rotary Club scholarship winners to attend the June 3 meeting. They’ll talk a little bit about their plans for college and beyond and pick up their scholarship checks.

Also, Lori Derauf said a grant application for $5,000 to be used for the solar light project at the Waunakee Dog Park has been submitted. She credited Linda Olson for doing most of the work on that application.

Jim Kattner from fundraising said flowers are still for sale; also, WaunaFest raffle tickets, with a portion of the proceeds going to the solar light project, will be available through WaunaFest weekend. The drawing is on July 31.

Bob Klostermann pulled off a fellowship event at Buck n’ Honey’s the prior evening, though the musician did not attend and it was not on the patio. Next week, Rotarians can attend an event at Octopi Brewing with the Waunakee Chamber of Commerce. The steak fury at the end of the month will be at Drumlin Ridge. Then, Rotarians can gather at Village Park for the Live from the Park music events starting June 21. A cruise on the Betty Lou is also planned.

The speakers and public relations committee has scheduled programs through September, and only nine openings are available for speakers through the rest of the year. If you have an idea for a program, let one of the committee members know.

The international committee will not collect school supplies from Prairie Elementary to ship to Honduras this year. But, Mick Holm is looking to help with a project by the Rotary Sunrise Club in Arizona. They’re writing a grant to fund a fluoride filtration system in Kenya, and are working with SOAR Kenya to implement it. The system filters the water so it contains acceptable levels of fluoride. Currently, the levels are so high, the groundwater causes weakened teeth and bones.
