Discover Wisconsin is celebrating its 35th year of promoting things to do and places to see in the state. At the April 21 Waunakee Rotary meeting, Brett Frizzell, director of Discover Mediaworks, spoke about the brand that has offered broadcasts and new products, including digital streaming, podcasts and video shorts.
During the pandemic, Discover Wisconsin’s online audience has grown to half million. The topics have broadened, too, featuring Wisconsin organizations such as the Ho-Chunk Nation, and themes, such as the arts in Wisconsin or the state’s bourbon trail.
Discover Wisconsin also has a digital app, a YouTube channel and more.
Brent said he was a naysayer with podcasts, but during the pandemic the audience exploded because they gave people the opportunity to look beyond the video at the content.
Other sub brands have included Know Your Wisconsin, a new video series.
About 40 people are employed at Discover Mediaworks. Communities looking to market themselves spend about $45,000 for an episode that includes two airings on television stations, social media marketing and exposure on the app. Digital shorts cost about $12,500.
Village Administrator Todd Schmidt said he and Chamber Director Ellen Schaaf connected with Brent to explore a modest marketing campaign aimed at promoting Waunakee’s businesses post pandemic.
