Two of the Waunakee Rotary Club’s newest members, Shauna Hughey and John Reuter,  gave their classification talks at the March 14 meeting.

Shauna, who works in business loans at Summit Credit Union, grew up in Columbus on a farm. Married with two sons ages 9 and 11, Shauna and her family live in Windsor. As a kid, she sold sweet corn with her family at the farmers market in Madison and from an early age, did those business transactions. She said that experience helped form her strong work ethic.

Ten years ago, her family transformed the farm into a wedding venue, and the barn is now used for that purpose. It is now the Barn at Stoney Knoll.

Shauna’s mother came to the United State from Germany, and each year, her family sent packages with traditional clothing, so Shauna and her family are ready for Wauktoberfest with lederhosen and such.

Shauna has been involved in other organizations, such as the Boys and Girls Club. Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Camp Kesera and with the Madison Business Forum,

She joined Rotary because she can involve her children and it’s neat to see the things the club does for the community.

John is married and has two children. He has served in the Air Force, enlisting in 2006, and is about to retire this month. John was deployed in 2009 to Kurdistan, where he volunteered with an orphanage, and that experience had an impact on him. He helped coordinate drives for clothing and other supplies and received a grant for an indoor bathroom and running water there.

While John was in the military, he earned his real estate license. He helps veterans find homes with a program called Homes for Local Heroes. John has given back, providing grants to the families of fallen firefighters, police officers and those in the military. The organization also provides ongoing support and offers seminars for veterans.

John also has a podcast focusing on the benefits veterans are eligible for.

He joined Rotary because his father-in-law Dick was a Rotarian in Beaver Dam who also had polio.
