From planning an arch connecting the two pillars at the Village Park entrance to a youth scholarship project, Waunakee Rotarians have been busy. At the March 28 meeting, the committee chairs discussed their projects and reported back to the club.

For fundraising, Jim Kattner said they are waiting to see a concept of the arch to begin seeking donations. The committee is also planning for WaunaFest, and Waunakee High School head football coach Pat Rice, who will retire after this year, has been asked to be the grand marshal. The WaunaFest committee hopes to add more children’s activities, but doing so will require a greater contribution and buy-in from all of the service clubs.

Robert Arntz reported that the youth and vocational committee has received 11 scholarship applications to be narrowed down to the finalists on April 5. Students are signing up for RYLA, and the World Affairs Seminar is coming up. Brisa is spending her last week or so with her second family and will move in with her third host family on Saturday. The committee is waiting to hear about an exchange student for next year.

Several new members have joined the club, Jim Elvekrog reported. The committee is still compiling a checklist for new members to become not-so-new and to trade in their red New Member badge for a blue badge. Soon that committee will begin talking about membership recruitment.

Community service committee members are looking ahead to Earth Day on April 22. They’re planning a clean-up day around the Village Center pond April 20, and possibly at the dog park, as well. There was discussion about the Castle Creek Conservancy bridges. One will be replaced by the village, and repairs may be made to the others.

For the meetings committee, speakers have been scheduled through mid July. If anyone knows of a speaker they’d like to see or a program, let Kylie West or any of the other committee members know. Kylie reported that the greeter sign-up is going well.

Fellowship is planning the steak fry for June 12 at Drumlin Ridge Winery and looking at other outings as well.

-President Jennifer Tasker inducted Sean Meffert as a member. Welcome, Sean!

-Carol Bleifield introduced Aliaja Wozniakowska, her contact from Poland who had been helping Ukrainian refugees. The club raised funds for this effort, helping her to purchase an ambulance so she could pick up refugees at the border,  but that was bombed. Aliaja has been affected by poison gas twice, Carol said. She’s here in the United States to stay for a while and take a break.

-Treasurer Jim Elvekrog is urging members to write a check for their dues rather than process them by credit card on clubrunner. That will save the club from paying fees, which can add up to $1,500 per year. Jennifer said as the board of directors has looked at the budget to see what’s been cut, this has been identified.
