The Waunakee Rotary Club is through with the main design for the arch at Village Park commemorating its 50th year, and after 2 ½ years of planning and design, is the project has approached the final fundraising stage.
Max Ujdak, Ken Pesik and Ken Ballweg have worked on the plan, and at the April 16 Waunakee Rotary meeting, they gave an update on the project.
Ken Pesik said he is excited to be at the stage with a general contractor selected – Weiser Brothers. Trevor Millin, that company’s vice president of operations, described a bit about the project, noting that they will provide project management and supervision, and get materials.
The project will require excavation of a section of asphalt, so one of the two Main Street entrances to the park will be closed during the work, which is expected to take about three weeks.
A new foundation will be built for the columns, which he described as “heavy duty pads.”
“We want to make sure this thing won’t go for a ride,” Trevor said.
Masonry has been chosen to match the stone on the existing bridges, but brick could be used instead to keep the cost down. Endres Manufacturing will provide the structural steel, and the electrical will be provided by Waunakee Utilities. Trevor also described lighting for the structure.
The pillars will be roughly 10 feet tall, with the entire structure at 15 feet tall. The arch will be about 25 feet wide. A panel across the arch will include pieces depicting Waunakee’s history that will be bolted in so they can be removed and repainted. So far, some ideas for those fixtures include the depot, water tower, local church steeples, the canning factory, the bridge over Six Mile creek, agricultural livestock and the Welcome to Waunakee signs, although other ideas are being considered, as well.
The club committed to raising approximately $52,000 in outstanding funds by May 31 to get construction started. The total project cost is $135,000. Members came forward at the April 16 meeting to serve on a fundraising committee that will meet at the April 23 meeting.
