If all goes as planned, the Waunakee Interact Club will have its name on a new well in Africa that will provide people within a rural community clean drinking water.

The high school club sponsored by Waunakee Rotary is partnering with the Nelson Family LIfe Foundation, charity:water and Kalahari to raise $10,000 for a well in Africa.

Three Interact Club members attended the Aug. 27 Rotary meeting to talk about their project. They noted that 696 million people have no access to clean water. The well will change lives, they said,  freeing up time that young people now spend walking to fresh water sources to bring water home. That would allow young people to attend school and get an education.

The Waunakee Interact members say they are the first student led organization to partner with charity:water and Kalahari to raise funds. All of the donations they receive will go directly toward the well project.

Now they are trying to spread awareness. So far, they’ve raised $1,500 cleaning trash bins. Donations can be made at www.charitywater.org/waunakee-interact#

The Interact club will raise funds for the well project through Dec. 31; if they fall short of their $10,000 goal, the funds raised will still go toward providing a well in a rural African community, but the club’s name will not be on the well.

The Interact Club works on local, regional and national projects. It has also raised funds for the Ronald McDonald House with a pop-top collection.
