The Peace Lutheran Church quilting group has received enormous support from the Waunakee Rotary Club, and at the club’s Dec. 4 meeting, quilters Jude Larson and Barbara Townley expressed their thanks.

They presented the club with two banners with all of the different Rotary flags from clubs throughout the United States and the world sewn on.

The quilting group began when, about 15 years ago, Barb mentioned to Phil Willems that she and others missed the Ben Franklin store where quilters purchased their supplies. Phil, the former store owner, brought her to his storage unit and donated fabric. Since the quilting group began, Rotary has donated funds each year.

Some of the quilter’s projects have included:

  • quilts shipped around the world through Lutheran World Relief

  • face masks for essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic

  • quilting kits

  • shirts for an orphanage in Haiti

After the presentation of the banners, Jon Townley noted that they remind him of the club’s international and national affiliation, adding there are “1.2 Rotary members throughout the world all trying to make the community and world a better place.”

In 2016, Rotarians Ken Pesik, John Cullen, Scott Cochems, Fritz Durst, Gary Epping and Bill Erickson got to meet more fellow Rotarians from the Sheridan, Wyoming Club when they were invited to a guided deer hunt.

Nine years later, Ken shared details about their stay and the hunt, which included a clay pigeon shoot, trap shooting competition and a prairie dog hunt. The Sheridan Club obtains the hunting permits to host other Rotary Clubs and the Wounded Warrior program, each year. Ken said they were excellent hosts.
