Two Waunakee High School students who attended the international World Affairs Seminar at Carroll University recently gave the club a report about their experience at the Waunakee Rotary Club’s July 2 meeting. .
Lily Arndt and Chloe Multerer will both be seniors in the fall. Lily is involved with DECA, FBLA and international relations, and Chloe is involved with DEI and equal opportunities in school initiatives. Chloe has also been involved in the Dane County government program for students.
The Waunakee club sponsored their attendance at the event organized each year by Rotary District 6270.
Chloe and Lily described the diplomacy simulation they participated in, which includes a scenario with the students acting as leaders of countries who must forge treaties with one another during a world event. They said the experience taught them about navigating diplomacy situations and trying to achieve the goals of the countries they represent while keeping the other countries’ interests in mind.
They also worked on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development goals that include reducing inequalities. One focus was on quality education and the effects of redlining practices used to segregate housing. The focus was also creating solutions and education.
The weeklong program at Carroll University included two to four speakers each day with topics such as AI, global issues and peacemaking. They engaged the students in conversation, allowing them to talk to experts.
Lily said the experience expanded her interest in global issues and politics, and she would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in peacemaking and making a difference in the world.
Chloe said that it would be valuable to any young person. She found herself wanting to become more educated about the issues and wanting to figure out how to solve them.
