The Waunakee Rotary Club Assembly on Feb. 26 allowed time for reflection on the work the club does locally and internationally, and to revisit the committee structure.
As was announced in an email before the meeting, the committees have been realigned to follow Rotary International’s Five Avenues of Community Service.
According the Rotary International website, those are:
- Club Service- the first Avenue of service.
- Vocational Service -- the Second Avenue of Service.
- Community Service -- the Third Avenue of Service..
- International Service -- the Fourth Avenue of Service.
- New Generations Service -- the Fifth Avenue of Service. Youth Services.
As such, the Waunakee club’s Meetings and Programs, Membership and Fellowship committees are now subcommittees that fall under Club Service. This is a time to revisit the committee you are on and decide if you’d rather be on a different committee. Or, if you’re a new member, find the committee you’re most interested in.
Before hearing from committee chairs, the club saw a video with an update on SOAR Kenya, the school the club has supported through the years. The Rotary has raised funds for a greenhouse that will help the school become more self-sustaining, with students and struggling families able to raise and sell vegetables. Currently, the school grows its own vegetables for meals.
The youth Interact Rotary Club also gave an update of their work, including their pop tab fundraiser and the Guatemala project.
As for the committee reports, the Youth and Vocational committee is planning for the scholarships applications to come in. The reading program at Heritage Elementary is going well. Six students have registered for the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, with two signed up for the World Affairs seminar.
Community service is planning its spring cleanup that includes repainting the concession stand at Village Park. The question is timing and weather, as the spring cleanup is normally April 25. Ken Pesik asked the club when the cleanup and painting should be done.
Another community service project is the arch over the Village Park entrance. Max Ujdak said the final engineering and design plans are completed.
The meetings committee has speakers booked pretty much through May. Committee Chair Kylie West is always looking for ideas for programs; these don’t always have to be speakers.
The membership committee is happy to have gotten to 94 members, but the goal is 100.
For international, more support is coming in for the Guatemala project.
The marketing and public relations committee has relaunched the Facebook page and reported that it now has 420 followers. Paid ads generated 61,594 impressions, and that’s just targeting the area around Waunakee, said Jen Tasker.
